The Hospitalization
My pregnancy was an ideal pregnancy right up to the 25 week mark. I didn't have trouble conceiving. I didn't get morning sickness. I was still exercising. Honestly, aside from gaining weight, some pregnancy brain, and fatigue I felt pretty normal. I even felt guilty about how easy things were going.
All of that changed when I woke up at 4 in the morning on the 3rd. My initial thought was that my water had broken. This was obviously an alarming thought at 25 weeks. Once I made it to the restroom I realized that what I was feeling was actually blood. And quite a bit of it. My alarm turned to sheer panic.
I woke Justin up and we rushed to the hospital. Once at the hospital, we were taken to triage in labor & delivery. One of the first things they did was hook me up to the monitors and we could hear Jack's heartbeat. Talk about an amazing feeling of relief.
The next bit is all a blur as the nurse got an IV going, ran through a million questions and we waited for our doctor (who happened to be on call). My doctor did an ultrasound and an exam. Our preliminary diagnosis was that it was likely a placenta abruption, meaning some of the placenta had broken apart. She wanted us to meet with the specialist on Friday to get a better idea of what was going on though.
The rest of the day was spent grappling with the idea that we may be in the hospital for quite some time, that we didn't really know what we were facing, but also reassured that Jack seemed to be fine.
